For years I had enjoyed good credit scores, thanks to my stable job and good financial decisions. I always paid my bills in time. But everything changed last year. Due to certain unforeseen events I incurred huge financial losses. My bills started piling and credit scores plunged. I really became worried as I was fully aware of the implications of bad credit score on my future financial prospects. I knew that I had to do something about this.
I started asking my friends for advice and some of them suggested credit repair. A few of them also warned me against credit repair scams in which innocent people lose thousands of dollars. Till then, I had never heard about credit repair. I searched extensively in internet and found some solid information. There were hundreds of people who gave testimonials for credit repair. I even found some forums where people shared their views and ideas of how they themselves repaired their credit.
I gained considerable knowledge about credit repair. Credit repairing is a proactive reaction wherein a customer tries to correct the wrong information in his credit report by disputing with credit agency and improving his credit score.
Armed with all this knowledge I decided to repair my credit. At first I thought of hiring some credit repairing agency. But later on I changed my mind. My friends boosted my confidence and I decided to repair my credit on my own.
The steps I took
1. First of all, I ordered for the credit reports from all the three credit bureaus. It is vital that you ask for reports from three bureaus as they do not share information amongst themselves and there are chances of them having different entries.
2. I went through each report in detail and tried to understand the terms used there. I kept on noting the incorrect information like wrong accounts, incorrect payment amounts and accounts that have been reported for late payment.
3. After noting all these information I wrote a letter to the credit bureau to correct the data. I also had the option of disputing it.
4. After the information was corrected I worked hard to improve my already damaged credit score. I cancelled a few of my credit cards and reduced credit limits on the ones which I kept with me.
5. I kept on making payments in time and improved my credit score, much to my relief.
Now I am confident about credit repair and advice people to go for it instead of suffering from low credit scores. I regularly visit the forums to update myself. So I finally planned to share this extensive knowledge that I have gathered in credit repair field by starting a blog.
I even know that there are lots of credit repairing companies, which are honest and quite effective. But still I strongly feel that it is better to do it on your own and save a few hundred dollars for future.
